Mining Our Past
A Comparison of Peruvian Silver Refineries with West Virginia Coal Mines
Digital Archaeology
Using technology to further public education
What do drones, 3-D printing, and virtual reality all have in common? They are all are new technologies archaeologists are using to help visualize life in the past.
For this public history project, I wanted to use digital archaeology to bring to life mining in Peru and West Virginia.
I used drones to take aerial photographs of mining camps in Peru, to help visualize what life was like in a forced labor camp. I also used 3-D models and 3-D printing to recreate artifacts from these camps - allowing me to share replica artifacts with people in the United States. Finally, I used a 360 degree video camera to create a virtual exhibit, allowing visitors to virtually walk through the exhibit!
